What is Soda Bread?
Soda bread originated from Europe in the Americas and was adopted by the Irish. It is a quick (dense) bread that uses baking soda as its leavening agent. It is traditionally made with simple ingredients such as flour, baking soda, salt, and buttermilk. The chemical reaction between baking soda and buttermilk produces carbon dioxide that causes the bread to rise.

How to Make Air Fryer Soda Bread
Step by step
- Preheat the air fryer to 345F/175C for 10 minutes.
- Combine the dry ingredients: all-purpose flour, baking soda, sugar, and salt, and mix until incorporated in a large mixing bowl.
- Pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients with a spatula or wooden spoon and mix until the dough comes together to form a sticky dough.
- Transfer the dough out on a lightly floured surface. Knead it gently until it comes together, then shape it into a flattened dome, not a round shape or a ball.
- Sprinkle some flour on parchment paper and place the shaped loaf onto it. With a sharp knife, cut a deep cross on the dough.
- Carefully place the bread in the preheated air fryer for 30-35 minutes.
- Flip the soda bread halfway through the cooking time to bake evenly. You will know the bread is ready if an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
- Remove the loaf from the air fryer, transfer it to a cooling rack to cool slightly, and serve with any spread of choice.
How to Store
Leftovers should be stored in a bread bin or a plastic bag. Keep at room temperature for up to 3 days.
Freezer – slice the bread, place it in a freezer-safe bag, and freeze it for up to 2 months.
To reheat - put bread in the toaster or reheat it in the air fryer for 1-3 minutes at 345F/175C or oven until warm.
Top tip
Air fryer temperature varies depending on size, make, and model. My delicious cravings recipe time is subject to a preheated air fryer. If you are trying this recipe for the first time, deduct 2 minutes from the cooking time and increase it if needed to allow the food to cook evenly.
