Salmon Furikake Recipe (Air Fryer Furikake Salmon)
Before we jump into this baked furikake salmon recipe, first, we need to know more about furikake.
What is furikake? Furikake is a savory Japanese condiment. Furikake means "to sprinkle something". Fu-ri-ka-ke has four syllables which are to be pronounced as spelled: fu-RI-Kah-kay and not fu-ry-cake.
This is a classic Japanese seasoning that is nutty-flavored, salty, and crunchy. Traditionally, furikake seasoning is sprinkled on cooked rice. It is an all-purpose seasoning that can also be sprinkled on noodles, vegetables, sauces, salads, pasta, eggs, or soups. There are different versions of furikake however, a typical blend includes sesame seeds, seaweed (dried nori), dried toasted sesame seeds, dried fish, dried egg, dried herbs, salt, and sugar. You can buy the seasoning in a grocery store or online.
Furikake Salmon can be baked in the oven or air fried. The Salmon furikake recipe is super easy and quick to follow. With four (4) ingredients coat the salmon fillets generously with Japanese furikake seasoning and then, air fry until cooked to perfection.

Mayonnaise – use any mayonnaise of choice. It acts as a binding agent which holds the dry ingredients in one place.
Soy Sauce - substitute with tamari sauce.
Salt to taste (optional)
Air fryer temperature varies depending on size, make, and model. My delicious cravings recipe time is subject to a preheated air fryer. If you are trying this recipe for the first time, deduct 2 minutes from the cooking time and increase it if needed to allow the food to cook evenly.
How to Cook Furikake Salmon in an Air Fryer
Preheat the air fryer for 3 minutes at 200C/400F. Pat dry salmon with a kitchen paper towel.
Mix the mayonnaise, soy sauce, garlic powder, and chilli flakes in a small bowl. Use a spoon to apply the paste generously on each fillet. Sprinkle some furikake seasoning on the fillets.
Spray the air fryer basket with some oil or use baking paper. Carefully place the salmon in the air fryer basket and cook at 200C/400F for 8 to 10 minutes or until the internal temperature reads 120F/50C.
Remove fish from the air fryer, serve and enjoy!
Tips
- For more heat and flavour, add some garlic powder and pepper to the furikake seasoning.
- Read the ingredients if you want furikake seasoning with and without MSG added before buying.
- Pat dry the salmon properly with a paper towel before adding the seasoning on top.
- If using skinless salmon, spray some oil in the air fryer basket.
- Cooking time depends on the thickness of the fish and the type of air fryer.
- Adjust the quantity of salt if using it.
How to Store and Reheat
Fridge: leave the salmon to cool and store for up to 3 days in an airtight container.
Freezer: you can freeze the salmon for up to 3 months in an airtight container or a Ziploc freezer bag.
Reheat furikake salmon in the air fryer or oven for 3-5 mins at 170C/340F. Place the salmon on a parchment paper-lined baking tray till warm through.
FAQs
Can I use frozen salmon?
Yes, you can cook frozen fish in the air fryer, and it is easy to do as well. Season the salmon as you would if it was fresh and cook for 10 to 12 minutes depending on the size and thickness.
Do I have to flip the salmon in the air fryer?
You do not have to flip the fish halfway through the cooking time.
How long do I cook salmon in the air fryer?
The cooking time depends on the size of the salmon sides or fillets, salmon will typically cook in the air fryer at a temperature of 200C/400F for 8 to 10 minutes. The internal temperature of the cooked salmon when checked with a meat thermometer should register 125F/51C.
